Nair Nair, L.S.(University of Connecticut); Injectable hydrogels are attractive alternatives to implantable delivery systems as they can provide a mild environment and allow for minimally invasive administration via endoscopic and percutaneous procedures. Chitosan is a widely investigated natural polymer for drug/protein delivery and cell delivery applications due to its excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. The poor solubility of chitosan at physiological conditions presents challenges in developing injectable formulations. We have developed injectable chitosan hydrogel as localized delivery vehicle via mild enzyme mediated/chemical crosslinking of glycol chitosan. We have investigated the feasibility to modulate the physical, mechanical and biological properties of glycol chitosan gels by varying its chemistry and crosslinking methods. Our studies on the localized delivery of cells, proteins and small molecules using the cross-linked glycol chitosan injectable hydrogels for various musculoskeletal applications will be discussed.
